A recent study suggests that patients who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a major medical journal points out that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People buying such treatments must be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a return to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Doctors suggest the way of the injections accounts for the heightened weight return.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this medication means hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."
An Ongoing Disease?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a intense return of hunger.
"It felt as if a trigger activating and you become starving," described one woman.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural changes.
